Who we are

We are the East and South East Asian Community Centre (ESEACC), a charity dedicated to serving the ESEA community by providing a physical space that acts as a local hub for support with essential services, as well as access to social, wellbeing, and community activities.

Formerly known as Hackney Chinese Community Services (HCCS), our charity was founded in 1987 with the aim of fostering a sense of community among the diverse ESEA populations in Hackney and its neighbouring boroughs. Following our move to the Old Bath House and our merger with the former An Viet Foundation, we are now committed to expanding our services to support the wider ESEA community across London.

We advocate for collective action to address shared concerns affecting the ESEA community and strive to make a positive impact through our programme of activities and services.

Meet our staff team

Jabez LAM

Acting Funding & Finance Manager

Jabez Lam came to the UK from Hong Kong in the 1970s to pursue his studies. To fund his education, Jabez worked in Chinese takeaways and London Chinatown’s restaurants, which exposed him to the challenges faced by Chinatown’s working class population and sparked a long career in social work and political advocacy. He became involved in voluntary work within the Chinese and later, the wider ESEA communities, working and campaigning for the rights of the marginalised. In addition to his involvement in social work alongside local councils, he was also a founding and active member of several other community organisations, including the Chinese Information and Advice Centre and Min Quan, which supported victims of labour exploitation, domestic violence, police abuse, hate crime and racism.

Over the past 50 years, Jabez has led many high-profile, impactful campaigns for justice, committing himself to addressing issues faced by London’s most vulnerable communities. His lifelong commitment to social change has been formally recognised by the Thirty Percy Foundation through its Elder Honouring Fund.

Jennie LOH

Operation Manager / Luncheon Club Chef / Hate Crime Caseworker

I am Jennie Loh, I have been part of the team since 2018.  I started as a Health Advocate, but now I wear a few different hats – from managing the Centre’s daily operations to supporting the community as a Hate Crime Case Worker and Lunch Club’s Chef.

As the Lunch Club Chef, I get to lean into my biggest passion, cooking. Coming from a Malaysian Chinese background, I truly believe in the power of food to bring people together.  For me, there’s nothing better than seeing everyone eating together like one big family, it’s where the best connections happen!

Yan MA

My name is Yan Ma, I have been working at the ESEA Community Centre since 2017, when it was formerly known as Hackney Chinese Community Services. As the Lunch Club Coordinator and Bookkeeper, I enjoy supporting our members and helping the Centre run smoothly.

I love my job because it gives me the opportunity to learn new things and help others every day. Our members are lovely people, and it is rewarding to see them enjoy our activities and feel connected to the community. I am also grateful for our dedicated volunteers, whose support makes a real difference to the centre and our members. Together with my wonderful colleagues, who work like family, we create a welcoming and supportive environment for everyone.

Bik Yu LIAN

He/They

Event & Volunteer Coordinator / Income Inclusion Officer (Together We Rise)

Borned to parents from Canton, China, in Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa (Auckland, NZ), the land of the long white cloud, I moved to the UK in September 2023 to pursue my MSc in the Philosophy of Science. I decided to temporarily stepped away from academia and found my way to HCCS, where I began volunteering in February 2025, before joining the staff team in April 2025.

Prior to my move to London, I had begun working with the Asian community in Aotearoa. London's bigger diaspora and the existence of community centres like ESEACC have given me a much-needed platform to continue that engagement with the diaspora that has been uprooted. I've had the privilege of meeting so many community organisers and volunteers from different ESEA backgrounds, each one an inspiration, and I sincerely enjoy working with them at the Centre every day. If you ever see me at the Centre, come say hi! I like music, Star Trek (TNG, DS9), films, reading among other things…
